REALTOR® Safety: Promoting Safety Culture in the Real Estate Industry

In the dynamic world of real estate, where opportunities and connections abound, safety should always remain a paramount concern. As September marks REALTOR® Safety Month, designated by the National Association of REALTORS® (NAR), it’s the perfect time to delve into the critical importance of fostering a culture of safety within the real estate community. At the Mississippi REALTORS® Institute, we take this mission to heart, striving to empower agents and clients alike with knowledge and tools to ensure secure transactions and interactions.

Embracing REALTOR® Safety: A Vital Imperative

In a profession that often involves meeting new clients, visiting vacant properties, and conducting open houses, safety must be a primary concern. September, designated as REALTOR® Safety Month by the National Association of REALTORS® (NAR), serves as a reminder that safety should always be at the forefront of our interactions. According to the 2020 REALTOR® Member Safety Report, nearly a third of real estate professionals have experienced situations that triggered fear. This stark reality underscores the urgent need for incorporating safety measures into every facet of our business.

Education as the Cornerstone of Safety Culture

At the Mississippi REALTORS® Institute, we firmly believe that education is the foundation of safety awareness. Whether you’re an experienced agent or just starting your real estate journey, staying informed about safety best practices is a collective responsibility. Our institute provides an array of resources, guidance, and training to empower professionals to seamlessly integrate safety protocols into their daily routines.

Creating a Secure Workspace

Safety begins within the walls of your office. Brokers play a critical role in fostering a culture of safety within their teams. At the Mississippi REALTORS® Institute, we advocate for brokers to establish safety as a core value from the very beginning. By doing so, brokers lay the groundwork for safer interactions among agents, clients, and colleagues.

Maintaining detailed records of clients and meetings, as well as requesting photo identification, significantly enhances security. These simple yet impactful measures not only establish safety protocols but also contribute to an office environment that prioritizes the wellbeing of all individuals involved.

Safe Practices for Client Engagement

Engaging with clients is an integral aspect of the real estate profession, and safety must be paramount during these interactions. For initial meetings, we recommend choosing neutral locations like coffee shops or meeting at the office. Open houses present an excellent opportunity to enhance safety by inviting a colleague to accompany you, ensuring a safer environment for both you and your visitors.

Leveraging safety apps and sharing your whereabouts with trusted contacts can add an extra layer of protection. Aligning with the principles of the REALTOR® Safety Pledge, which emphasizes conducting business in a reasonably safe manner, reinforces the commitment to the safety and wellbeing of all parties involved in a transaction.

Preserving Property and Privacy

Property showings are a crucial part of real estate, but they also introduce potential risks. To safeguard property and enhance privacy, it’s prudent for sellers to remove valuable items, personal information, prescription medications, and firearms from the premises. The Mississippi REALTORS® Institute strongly recommends collaboration between sellers and REALTORS® to implement the Safe Listings Form, ensuring that showings are limited to pre-qualified or properly identified buyers.

Unlocking Resources for a Safer Real Estate Experience

The Mississippi REALTORS® Institute understands the value of accessible safety resources. Partnering with the National Association of REALTORS® (NAR), we provide a range of tools designed to enhance safety awareness and education. The Resources for Personal Protection page offers insights, safety applications, and products to empower real estate professionals to make informed decisions about their safety measures.

A Safer Future Awaits

As REALTOR® Safety Month takes center stage in September, the Mississippi REALTORS® Institute invites the entire real estate community to embrace safety practices as an integral part of their daily operations. From securing the office environment to ensuring safe client interactions, prioritizing safety ensures a successful and secure future for everyone.

Safety isn’t just an individual responsibility; it’s a shared commitment that shapes the essence of the real estate industry. Together with the National Association of REALTORS®, the Mississippi REALTORS® Institute takes proactive strides toward establishing a safer and more secure real estate landscape.
